The ICAR- Agricultural Technology Application Research Institute (ATARI), Umiam with its headquarters at Umiam, Meghalaya is primarily responsible for systematic coordination, monitoring and reviewing of mandated activities of KVKs such as technology assessment, refinement, demonstrations, training programmes and other extension activities in North Eastern Region of India comprising of five states, viz. Manipur, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Mizoram and Tripura In addition, the institute is also engaged in formulation and implementation of need based research projects as part of strengthening agricultural extension research and knowledge management. During the year 2016-20, the institute completed 5 (five) institute research projects besides implementing 8 (eight) important R&D programmes namely; National Innovation on Climate Resilient Agriculture (NICRA), Attracting and Retaining Youth in Agriculture (ARYA) and Farmer FIRST Projects (FFP), CFLD on Oil Seeds, CFLD on Pulses, District Agricultural Meteorological Unit (DAMU), Paramparagata Krishi Vikash Yojana (PKVY) and ASCI accredited skill training programmes through its 43 KVKs in 5 NEH states of the region.
The ICAR-ATARI, Umiam obtained ISO 9001:2015 for three years during 2016-17 and the same has been further extended for another three years up 2022. Dr. Bidyut C. Deka, Director, ICAR-ATARI, Umiam received the Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Award for outstanding research in tribal farming system from ICAR, New Delhi in July 16, 2016. The institute also bagged the Best Stall Exhibition Award in Krishi Unnati Mela, 2017 during 15th-17th March, 2017 at IARI, New Delhi. During 2016-19, the Institute has established eight new KVKs, two each in Nagaland and Meghalaya and four in Tripura. ICAR-ATARI, Umiam constructed its Administrative building inside the ICAR Research Complex in 20 months time and the same was inaugurated by the honorable Secretary, DARE & DG, ICAR on June 01, 2019. During 2016-20, Scientists of the Institute published 27 research articles in prestigious national and international research journals and one of the papers has the NAAS impact factor of as high as 9.85. Recently, the institute also brought out a publication entitled Technology Inventory for Northeast India incorporating the technologies developed by AAU, CAU, ICAR Complex and other ICAR Institutes of the region besides eleven such other publications highlighting the success of the Institute in disseminating various technologies to stakeholders. In the Institute, the online reporting system has been made mandatory for submission of all reports by KVKs including release of fund to the KVKs as part of Digital India initiative of the Government of India. The institute also serves as feedback mechanism to research and extension systems while maintaining a very close liaison with ICAR headquarters and has made significant progress in research, capacity building and other extension activities.
Through this web site, an attempt has been made to highlight the various activities of the institute in a comprehensive manner for the benefit of policy makers, decision makers, research institutes, extension workers, KVKs and other stakeholders including farmers in the region.
